Hydrocarbon Diluents Used in PVC Pastes

Hydrocarbon cuts are generally used as viscosity depressants. The most common types are:

  • White Spirit: SPIRDANE D40, D60
  • Kerosene type such as KETRUL D80, D100
  • Extra low aromatics diesels cuts: FLUID D120, FLUID D135
  • Low VOC diesel cuts: HYDROSEAL G290H, G340H

Note: Depending of the country or the target market, the product manufacturer has to
evaluate the VOC emission in its finished products, and NOT in the components.

Effect of Viscosity Depressants

Viscosity of a PLASTISOL (PVC paste) Changes:

  • With storage time
  • With sheer force

Choice of Viscosity Depressant depends on:

  • Required viscosity reduction
  • Volatility requirements
  • Odor
  • Purity requirements (food contact)
