Explosives are used in numerous industrial applications such as dynamiting, tunnel construction, demolition, mining and mineral extraction. Whether in solid or emulsion form, they may contain a significant portion of fuel oil.

Ammonium Nitrate-Based Explosives

New TotalEnergies FLUID dedicated diesel range as pure Fuel oil is designed to be used in Ammonium Nitrate (AN) explosives as ANFO (solid – prills) as well as emulsions. Compared to standard diesels, mineral oils, or reprocessed oils, our FLUID range offers outstanding benefits such as:

  • Classified as “readily biodegradable” in OECD 301B method
  • Safer for workers as they comply to EU/US/JP pharmacopeia purity criteria
  • In line with current and coming regulations in Europe and USA (Florida) to ban Aromatics, PAHs, BTEX in emulsions.
  • Contain no impurities and can easily be emulsified with appropriate surfactants/emulsifiers and offer stable emulsions as more viscous mineral oils.
  • Extra low aromatic content and non CMR (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, Reprotoxic), unlike standard fuel-oil and diesel ordinarily used, which are labeled as CMR (cat.2)
  • VOC free - Not classed at 20°C as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) under EU Directive 1999/13. and CARB requirements (US California Air Resources Board).

TotalEnergies Fluid Range in Anfo

  • Flash point in the ideal range (high flash points can reduce the velocity of detonation)
  • Broad viscosity and pour point range
  • High purity resulting in low toxic fumes (no sulfur oxide SOx, less nitrogen oxide NOx), and no odor, particularly when they are applied underground. Users can quickly resume work which increases productivity.

TotalEnergies Fluid Range in Emulsions

  • Easily pumpable emulsions over a broad temperature range and even after exposure to high shear strength (by use of high performance pumps) due to their higher viscosity index than standard diesels.
  • Longer storage life than emulsions with standard diesel oils are obtained with selected surfactants.
  • Excellent emulsion stability due to the absence of aromatic compounds (which can cause crystallization and emulsion breaking), giving a longer lifespan compared to standard diesel/oil emulsions.
