Argentina and Chile in the quarterfinals
(June 14th, 2016) Pizzi’s team pulled a 4-2 win over Panama, advancing to the quarterfinals. Argentina, who had already qualified for the quarterfinals, cruised to a 3-0 win over Bolivia, confirming Group D’s first place.
Copa America Centenario’s last group stage day started off with a thrilling clash between Chile and Panama at the Lincoln Financial Field, this determined who would clinch a spot in the quarterfinals.
"Bolillo" Gómez’s team began with a nice goal scored by Miguel Camargo in the fifth minute, although Eduardo Vargas equalized ten minutes later, scoring a brace (two goals). During the second half, Aléxis Sánchez extended the lead of “la Roja” (Chile), Abdiel Arroyo scored for Panama and, finally, Arsenal’s striker (Aléxis Sánchez) secured the 4-2 win to qualify to the next stage. Now, Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team will face Mexico on June 18th at Levi's Stadium.
On Tuesday, Argentina confirmed Group D’s first place with a solid 3-0 win over Bolivia, who was definitely knocked out of the tournament after suffering three defeats.
Erik Lamela, who benefited from Bolivia´s foul in a dangerous area, opened the scoring 1-0 with a deflected free-kick; Ezequiel Lavezzi made it 2-0 two minutes later and Víctor Cuesta got his first international goal playing for Argentina, securing an overwhelming 3-0 during the first half. Fans went wild when Lionel Messi was subbed on at the beginning of the second half at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
Now, the Copa America Centenario will return on June 16th with the first quarterfinal clash between the local United States team and Ecuador, at the same stadium where Argentina played against Bolivia. On June 17th, Peru will face Colombia and, the next day, Argentina against Venezuela and Mexico versus Chile will close the quarterfinals stage.
